Joyce Ng
The hours between twelve and three a.m. are surrendering. It is in these hours where oversharing becomes a backwashed word, dug deep into the crevices of our minds. It is a shedding of the thickest layer of skin, irrevocably vulnerable as the unspeakable begins to take form. It is in these moments where you tell me the secrets you hide from the “love of your life”. Here, you are allowed to speak freely – to speak about the horrors of the day and watch as they disappear into the night. It is in these moments where I begin to understand the hesitation, the stories, and the lines drawn between our daily hours of codependency. How your dark shadows sneak up on you just as much as mine do, and how we aren’t as mighty as we show the world. It is in these moments where I feel a sense of collectivism. If I hold on to you, I might never lose my grip. If I speak in double time, you’ll stop me from running too far. It is in these moments where I become trapped in a glass cage, under dizzying microscopic vision. I’ll prowl around and study the crease between your eyes that I swore was never there before.
