By Isabella Lagarto

Oh, how your eyes glimmered in the sun
What a beautiful glint in your eyes!
How I wish you could stay.

You serve me a meal with love,
I desperately eat, down to every crumb,
You sit across and watch me say
How I wish you could stay!

I’m growing older now
You ensure that you remind me of your love,
You say it every day
Time changes, but your love stays the same
How I wish you could stay.

Your eyes don’t shine like they used to,
They are a new shade of dull,
I sit by your bedside,
And the tears glint in your eyes.
How I wish you could stay.

You try to muster the strength,
To tell me that you love me,
But a weak, frail breath comes out instead.
I see the defeat in your eyes:
Eyes once filled with joy.
Your body has failed you,
The warmth escapes you,
And I hold you––
now, I have the glimmer in my eyes.
I wish you could have stayed.
